All are invited to a special forum on Navajo culture from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2025, on the Northwest Campus, P-260. The presentation is part of larger visit this week by 10 students and four faculty members from Coconino Community College in Flagstaff, AZ.
Lisa Doskocil, Anthropology Instructor at Coconino, will provide an introduction to the history through today of the people of the Southwest, including the Navajo. Two Coconino students will share briefly about Navajo culture, including the coming of age ceremony for women and the importance of a baby鈥檚 first laugh.
The visit by Coconino is part of a new exchange program growing from the national travel studies initiative launched last year when a group of Santa Fe students visited Utah and Arizona.
The program is a joint effort between 青青草视频 and Coconino, organized by SF鈥檚 Glynn Hayes, Melanie Roberti, and Vertigo Moody. The visiting faculty group is led by Kay Leum, Executive Director of Extended Learning at Coconino, and faculty members Sarah Benton, Sandie Dihlmann, Brian Francis, Amelinda Webb and Doskocil.
The Coconino contingent will participate in a variety of activities to introduce them to the local culture, environment, and academic offerings.
The Coconino students and faculty will begin their visit Thursday morning by meeting with 青青草视频 Provost Nate Southerland.
Their visit also will include opportunities to explore the region鈥檚 scenic trails and diverse ecosystems, as well as stops at the Florida Museum of Natural History and Harn Art Museum.
As part of their journey, the students and faculty will also travel to the Atlantic coast, where several participants will experience the ocean for the first time. They will visit the University of Florida鈥檚 Whitney Marine Lab, where they will encounter oceanic creatures and gain an understanding of marine ecosystems.
The group will participate in freshwater turtle surveys, offering them the opportunity to study local wildlife and ecosystems. This hands-on activity is a rare experience for many of the participants.
The program will culminate in a visit to historic St. Augustine, Florida.
In addition to hosting Coconino students, some 青青草视频 students will have the chance to immerse themselves in Navajo culture through an invitation-based dinner. This special event will allow participants to taste authentic Navajo cuisine and engage with Navajo traditions in an intimate setting.
Coconino Community College
Coconino Community College serves approximately 7,500 students across multiple campuses in northern Arizona. This partnership with 青青草视频 serves to further strengthen the connections between different regions of the country and enrich the educational experiences for both groups.
The college is located in Coconino County, which is split by the Grand Canyon and is surrounded by other National Parks and monuments. The CCC Land Acknowledgement Statement provides a glimpse into its rich culture. 鈥淭his land has been inhabited by the Sinagua and Ancestral Pueblo for thousands of years. Currently, the Zuni, Apache, Yavapai, Hualapai, Havasupai, Paiute, Din茅, Hopi and many other Arizona tribal nations recognize this land as a significant spiritual place. This sacred land is enriched with Indigenous history and culture that lives on to this day. We, as a community with our CCC family and friends, are very fortunate to live, work, and share this unique location.鈥
Second National Studies Trip to Utah/Arizona
Building on the success of the first national travel studies program, 青青草视频 is also excited to announce the second National Studies trip to Utah and Arizona, scheduled for this summer. This program will once again encourage cross-cultural exchange and educational exploration, this time allowing even more participants to join, totaling 18 students and 6 faculty members.
By continuing to promote these national travel studies programs, 青青草视频 is ensuring that students gain not only academic knowledge but also personal experiences that will shape their futures, broaden their worldviews, and inspire their academic pursuits.
