CTLE Faculty Spotlight: Nursing Department鈥檚 TiLT DARP

This month鈥檚 Faculty Spotlight highlights the Nursing Department鈥檚 Departmental Action Research Plan (DARP) at 青青草视频. DARPs are collaborative faculty initiatives designed to enhance student learning and success through targeted instructional strategies. The Nursing Department chose Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TiLT) as their intervention, focusing on improving student outcomes in areas where they struggled the most.
Identifying Areas for Improvement
Devon Darby, one of the professional development leads for the Nursing Department, shared that their team analyzed multiple years of student performance data to pinpoint topics where students faced the greatest challenges. The team identified two areas in the Fundamentals of Nursing course鈥攎obility and nutrition鈥攚here students consistently scored the lowest.
To address this, the department created two assignments using the TiLT framework, which clarifies purpose, task, and success criteria to enhance student understanding. The goal was to measure whether these changes would lead to higher exam scores on related content and improve overall course success rates.
Measuring the Impact
The Nursing Department tracked several key metrics:
- Average grades on TiLTed assignments
- Overall exam scores for questions related to TiLTed content
- Course success rates (number and percentage of students passing the course)
The results showed significant improvements:
- Mobility-related exam scores increased by 8.13%
- Nutrition-related exam scores increased by 2%
- Overall course pass rates increased by 7%
While both areas showed progress, the team also noted variations between courses, the same gains were not seen consistently in the maternal infant nursing course.
Encouraged by these results, the Nursing Department is expanding their TiLT implementation. Their next step is to apply TiLT strategies in another course, targeting additional challenging content areas to further support student success.
