Special Topics Course Offered in Spring: 鈥淔ood, INC.鈥�

Rhonda Morris, Associate Professor of English, is offering a special topics course in the spring called 鈥淔ood, INC.鈥� The course will explore contemporary food culture with a special focus on the environmental, health, and social effects of major systems of food production (industrial and alternative鈥攐rganic, local) in the United States, so it will be of interest to organic gardeners and people who care about what they eat.
鈥淲e鈥檒l be studying documentaries (Food, Inc., The Future of Food, Super Size Me); viewing popular films and programs (Ratatouille, Julie and Julia, This American Life); and discussing readings such as Michael Pollan鈥檚 The Omnivore鈥檚 Dilemma and Eric Schlosser鈥檚 Fast Food Nation. In prior terms, the class has had as guest speakers someone involved in establishing Citizen鈥檚 Food Co-op and the Blue Kitchen Incubator, sellers at farmers markets, an engineer working on creating a food digester to turn restaurant waste into energy, ranchers, and employers /owners of local eateries.
ENC 2305.004 meets on Fridays from 11 a.m.-1:45 p.m.; it fulfills the Communications B (Inquiry and Discourse) general education requirement and meets 3 hours of a Gordon Rule writing intensive course.
